Overview
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies was established in the year 1993, the year in which BHS HES was celebrating its Golden Jubilee. It was inaugurated by Shri. B.V.Acharya, the then Advocate General, Government of Karnataka, Dr. V.B.Coutinho, the then Dean and Principal of University Law College, Bangalore, presided over the function. Shri. G.Y.Subba Rao assumed office as the first Principal of the college. Subsequently, Prof. Anand Rao of the Department of English served as the acting Principal for a short term.
On the 10thof July, 1996, Prof. S.S.Alur, retired Professor of Law, Karnataka University, was appointed as the Principal. His arrival as the Principal galvanised the growth and development of the college. His commendable contribution to the college in terms of his insight, a treasure trove of knowledge, guidance and uncanny expertise has brought this institution to where it is today. Then, Prof. S.S.Alur was designated as the Director and on the 23rd of February, 2000, Smt. C.S.Kanthi assumed office as the Principal of the college. Owing to personal reasons, she passed on the baton to Prof.S.B.Jatti.
Dr. Sapna S took over from Prof. S.B.Jatti in November 2013. She studied B.A. (Law) and LL.B. in University Law College, Bangalore and secured First Class, First rank. She briefly practiced for two years in the Criminal Court in Bangalore. Thereafter, she undertook post-graduate work earning an LL.M. degree with First Class, First rank, focusing on Consumer Protection Law at University Law College, Bangalore. She has taken her Doctorate from National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore in 2014. Smt. Preeti S. Desai took over from Dr. Sapna S in May 2017. She is presently the Principal of Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies where she has worked since 2013. She completed her B.Com. and LL.B. in 1997 and 2000 respectively. She completed LL.M. in the year 2002 and secured 3rd Rank in Karnataka University, Dharwad. She is tirelessly working towards improving the college and making it one of the best law schools in India.
Courses
Fees : Approximately ₹1,60,000 to ₹1,80,000 per year, depending on the program and domicile status.
Admissions
BILS offers a five-year integrated B.A. LL.B. program. Candidates must have secured at least 45% marks in their Pre-University Course (PUC) or 10+2 examination to be eligible. Admissions are highly selective, with approximately 500 applicants annually competing for 60 seats, and selection is based purely on merit.
Scholarship
BILS students may be eligible for the BHS HES Student Welfare Fund, which awards scholarships of ₹35,000 along with a certificate of merit. Recipients are selected based on specific criteria set by the management.
