Overview
IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) is an entrance exam conducted every year for admission to:
- M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree, and other Post-Bachelor's Degree Programs
- Offered at IITs, IISc Bangalore, and other top institutes.
The exam is conducted online (Computer Based Test) and is usually held in February. The organizing institute changes every year.
Registration Eligibility
- Educational Qualification:
- Bachelor's degree in any discipline with required subjects.
- Candidates must have passed the degree (no minimum % required from 2022 onwards).
- Final-year students can also apply.
- Nationality:
- Indian nationals and foreign nationals are eligible.
- Age Limit:
- No age limit for JAM exam.
- Subjects Eligibility:
- Candidates must check subject-specific eligibility criteria of the institutes they are applying to.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus
The IIT JAM exam is divided into three sections:
✅ Section A – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
- Number of Questions: 30
- Total Marks: 50
- Each question has 4 options with only one correct answer.
- Negative marking is applicable:
- 1 mark questions: -1/3
- 2 mark questions: -2/3
✅ Section B – Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)
- Number of Questions: 10
- Total Marks: 20
- Each question may have one or more correct answers.
- No negative marking.
- All correct options must be selected to get full marks.
✅ Section C – Numerical Answer Type (NAT)
- Number of Questions: 20
- Total Marks: 30
- No options are given; candidates must enter a numerical value.
- No negative marking.

You can choose 1 subject from the following:
- Mathematics (MA)
- Physics (PH)
- Chemistry (CY)

- Mathematics includes calculus, algebra, real analysis, differential equations, etc.
- Physics includes mechanics, electricity & magnetism, optics, quantum mechanics, etc.

How To Prepare
1. Understand the Syllabus & Pattern
- Start with the official syllabus and know the weightage of each topic.
2. Choose Right Books & Resources
- NCERT + B.Sc. textbooks
- IIT JAM preparation books (Arihant, GATE Academy, etc.)
3. Make a Study Plan
- Set monthly & weekly targets
- Include revision and mock tests
4. Practice Previous Year Papers
- Solve JAM papers of last 5–10 years
5. Take Mock Tests Regularly
- Use online platforms like Testbook, Eduncle, Unacademy, etc.
6. Join Coaching (Optional)
- For structured guidance (Offline/Online)
Admit Card
- The admit card is released on the official JAM portal about 2–3 weeks before the exam.
- You must download and print it from the official website.

🔑 Important:
- Carry a valid ID proof (like Aadhar, Passport, PAN) along with the Admit Card on the exam day.
